DRUMMER

THE DRUMMER

"Playing fast around the drums is one thing. But to play music, to play with people for others to listen to, that’s something else. That’s a whole other world."

Keir has been playing drums for over 20 years, he's studied music at degree level and performed on stages throughout the UK and across the world, playing festivals such as Afropunk (Paris, New York, Johannesburg) Camp Bestival (UK), Jamie Olivers Feastival (UK), Pukkelpop (Belgium), Lowlands festival (Netherlands). Plus live shows at incredible venues such as Union Chapel (London) Royal Albert Hall (London) Cafe de la Danse (Paris) and Kantine am Berghain (Berlin).

Through his early years of experience Keir developed a deep understanding of style and groove that underpins his sound to date, but it was after Keir completed his degree from Tech Music School (aka BIMM London) in June 2015 that he began to make his name known within the London music scene. Keir has done session work for artists such as Nakhane, The Anchoress, Liam CrombyROCH, My Life As A MothAxel Jansson, Emma Hatton, Rachel Tucker, XylarooJoe Singo and David Sinclair. Each artist was a step towards Keir establishing his skills, yet it was his work with ROCH and producer Ben Christophers that would shape his own sound more than any other.

ROCH had worked in collaboration with Ben Christophers (Bat For Lashes, ROCH and Nakhane) for a while and they had a unique approach with drum production which often fused live drums and sampled sounds into an organic percussion track. It was this concoction of sounds that allowed Keir to hone his abilities in production and live performance where he used a combination of audio manipulation and SPD-SX sampling to recreate the sounds of Ben's productions. This was key in Keir's development which eventually lead to him working with artists such as Nakhane who Keir toured all over the world with from September 2017 to December 2019, re-creating Nakhane's incredible "You Will Not Die" album. Keir then went on to record drums with amazing Producer Emre Turkmen (Years & Years) on Nakhanes dance floor filling record "Do You Well". In 2023 and 2024 Keir joined Nakhane for another World tour of their new record "Bastard Jargon".

In 2023 Keir was honoured to join incredibly talented artist The Anchoress for her UK tour which celebrated her acclaimed album "The Art Of Losing". The shows were well received and culminated in an extraordinary show at The Union Chapel in London. Keir has continued his work with The Anchoress and has since recorded several drum tracks for her next musical project.

Production has always been a fascination of Keir's. Even before he knew what it was, Keir would listen to the sounds of records and fall in love with the collage of sounds that made music groove. It was this attention to sound that took a real leap of growth when he began his music degree at Tech Music School. During those years of study Keir developed a strong foundation on Logic Pro, Pro Tools and later Ableton where he began experimenting with creative recording techniques and the manipulation of audio. From these experiments Keir started to develop a sound that capitalises on his strengths in rhythm and groove. Keir references his production as a concoction of James Blake, Questlove (The Roots and D'Angelo) and Chris Clark (Clark). These influences draw Keir's sound towards an electronically produced sound steeped in the timbre of acoustic audio. To date Keir's production skills can be heard within his original band Plastic Sun as well as for other alternative original projects.

In 2017 Keir was commissioned to create a body of music for a Fringe theatre performance based around professional cycling and the topical subject of 'doping'. For this project Keir decided to combine raw drum audio with samples taken from a bicycle to create his own instruments using granular synthesis and sampler instrument software. The theatre piece was a success and has since been performed in London. Some of Keir's compositions from this project can be heard below.

EDUCATOR

"A good teacher can inspire hope, ignite the imagination, and instill a love of learning."

Good teachers don't stop teaching the moment a student walks out the door. Good teaching goes beyond the lesson, Keir is a strong believer of teaching like mentorship offering a more holistic approach to education. Keir offers guidance and advice that stretches beyond the skills of the subject and introduces students to a more conceptual approach to learning that can be applied beyond one instrument. Taking a leaf out of the book of some of Keir's favourite educators such as Tim Robbins, Kenny Werner and incredible instrumentalists such as Benny Greb, Mark Guiliana, Steve Gadd and Steve Jordan, Keir commits to guiding his students through the entire capability of the drum kit and into how these skills can be adapted into any working situation. The drum set is a complex instrument and requires an incredible amount of dedication and determination from students and teachers, yet it is these very characteristics that make the drum kit such a rewarding instrument to play.

Many great performers, leaders and entrepreneur's play the drums not only for its recreational qualities but also as a form of mental stimulation. Music is too often an untapped and underplayed skill that can help people from all walks of life learn and develop. Its ability to ignite both sides of the brain has been known to help people struggling with mental health issues such as depression, ADHD and autism. The power of music and its healing powers can be seen through studies by psychologists such as Oliver Sacks (author of best selling book Musicophilia) and organisations such as Nordoff Robbins.

Drum lessons with Keir cover a wide spectrum of subjects from; technique (beginner to advanced); musical styles (rock, jazz, electronic and beyond); groove, sound and experimentation; conceptual playing and studies as well as industry guidance discussing subjects such as making a living within music, self promotion and self management.
